You decide who will win $10,000, embark on an expedition in a Winnebago RV, and appear in Outside Magazine
Did you know that a few of our Nation's National Parks play a deep role in African American History? Biscayne National Park started thanks in part to the Jones Family, an African American family who had a Lime business. Sequoia National Park had the first African American Superintendent, Brigadier General Charles Young. I would rank both National Parks at the top of my list as “dreams of visiting!”
What has been your favorite adventure experience?“Dear journal, Today I was scared to go Kayaking. I was scared of the Sea Manatee. Once we got out there, it was amazing. Me and Rhia were the first to pet them. His name was Scare Face. He was beautiful. We saw a hawk, fish, and mating Seacows. I got to ride in the queen bee seat. It was different from the other seats. It was like a lawn chair. Tomorrow is a sad day we leave (6/2/2000)” age 12 I suppose it’ll always be this answer: little Aleshea in the water, captivated by nature.
What would you do with $10,000?At 13, visiting the George Washington Carver National Monument, I was struck by the words “more than the Peanut Man” on a Girl Scout trip. Stories often reveal more than we first see. Each storyteller can influence many with their tales. Discovering what stories to tell can be a journey in itself, and sometimes stories find us. If chosen for the $10,000, I’ll document and share stories of overlooked parks and nature’s impact, hoping to inspire others to connect with and share their own stories.
